Yes, the Web 2.0 carry-on is starting to get people all excited about making squillions of dollars again. Just three weeks ago someone paid US$115,000 for the domain name — yes, just for the name — refresh.com, which looks like it’s trying to clone MySpace’s success. A shame they didn’t spend a quarter of that on design — though MySpace does just fine while looking pig-ugly.

When, exactly, did ‘Web 2.0′ happen? I’m not up on these cybercliches, but it sounds like evolution rather than revolution to me. Did a journo wake up one morning and find they had to install another plugin?

Well indeed, Richard. And as the Wikipedia article says early on, “some technology experts, notably Tim Berners-Lee, have questioned whether the term has meaning.” And Sir Timothy may well have a point — after all, he invented the Web.
