I've had the same thing said about using FourSquare. My reply is much as you have said above. Telling people where I am does nothing to prevent random attack or mugging, but it does help people I want to interact with. As an example, I had to rush away from a function in Sydney last week to catch a train. Tweeting that I was on a certain platform at Central told the people I had left that I had made it in time and told my wife what time to expect me home. If an enemy saw it and decided that this meant that blowing up the 9:09 Mt Victoria train was a good way to get me then all I can say is that anyone that well organised is more than a match for me anyway.

As for burglars while I'm away from home, I also rely on the relative lack of crime in the Blue Mountains, but also there is almost nothing I don't carry with me that can't be replaced.

The only exceptions I make are that I don't publicly announce that the family will be away on holidays and I don't have luggage tags with my address on the outside of checked bags when travelling.

Thank you, gentlemen. I've added a tag at the top of the post to stress that I was considering "personal safety" only.

That said, a similar risk analysis for myself would differentiate between opportunistic and targeted burglary. Opportunistic burglars are unlikely in the remoter parts of the Blue Mountains, and my time elsewhere is usually spent in hotels with video surveillance. A targeted burglar would find far richer pickings elsewhere, since the only things of value are items I generally have with me at all times. My dirty socks and underwear they can go for with my blessing.

I've been a victim of burglary twice, if I remember correctly. I might post about those and the lessons learned another time.

I prefer not to broadcast a schedule of best times/dates to burgle my house. (Ran afoul of that in the past -- not online, just a tradie who asked too many questions.) But in terms of personal safety, I applaud your rational risk-management thinking.

"If the assailant wants to harm me because they know me, then they’ll be motivated and put some effort into it."

Exactly, if we wanted to do you harm, it'd just be a matter of getting at you when you're at your current residence with some explosives.......
