[...] Well, you’d think that parental supervision and PC-based filtering, applied by parents to computers to which their children have access, would be a far more effective way of stopping children seeing porn than just hoping you can somehow distinguish between children and adults’ internet access from the level of government, but that’s not the point Hamilton’s trying to make. The prurient first five paragraphs are simply to disturb parents and panic them into supporting whatever hare-brained scheme the government comes up with to “solve” this terrible problem, whatever the cost to their own liberties. (Or real efforts to catch those who would harm their children.) [...]

[...] Rudd hampers police child-protection efforts - "$2.8 million, which the Howard government allocated to expand the Australian Federal Police’s Online Child Sexual Exploitation Team (OCSET), was instead used by Rudd to help create Conroy’s $44.5 million Rabbit-Proof Firewall. … Without that money, OCSET simply doesn’t have the staff to investigate all of the suspected pedophiles it already knows about." [...]

[...] There’s also the point — which Wallace doesn’t even mention — that the filter may not be the most efficient use of the taxpayers’ money. If we’re talking about preventing child abuse, for example, the money would achieve more if it went to the police. [...]

@greta: GetUp! is running the Save the Net campaign, which includes a petition:

The Federal Government is planning to force all Australian servers to filter internet traffic and block any material the Government deems ‘inappropriate’. Under the plan, the Government can add any ‘unwanted’ site to a secret blacklist.

Testing has already begun on systems that will slow our internet by up to 87%, make it more expensive, miss the vast majority of inappropriate content and accidentally block up to 1 in 12 legitimate sites. Our children deserve better protection -- and that won't be achieved by wasting millions on this deeply flawed system.

They've already raised over $46,000 and nearly 95,000 signatures.

Yeah I agree, that's frigging insane. Is there some web petition we can sign to prevent this? Or can we make one? Will it help?
