After spending a couple of days at the WebForward conference at CeBit, I am compelled to nominate (mostly) all marketing peeps for their continued insistence on trying to find a way to control/monetise the social media movement.

They very politely listened to all the advice, the stories, the metrics, the predictions for the future – then asked how they control, manage, track and monetise it!

The tide of change is very quickly going to become a rip tide for some of them, and they will fight it all the way until they run out of energy and drown.

Barak Obama for opposing the release of photos depicting abuse of Iraqi detainees on grounds the pictures could inflame anti-American sentiment and endanger US troops. Well duh! That horse bolted along time ago Mr Sensitive!

Folks, don’t forget that the key issue is about futilely holding back the tide of change — the connection with King Cnut. Something which is “merely” behaviour you don’t like is unlike to get your nominee onto the shortlist, an can lead to embarrassment or ridicule.

Hello,

I’d like to nominate Kevin Rudd, for the monstrous pre-budget “horror/shock/global economic crisis” line that he has been pushing for weeks. This impeded the tide of progress by causing several people to make massive pre-emptive sackings.

For a special mention though – how about Vision Australia – 60 people (including some blind folks) called into a conference room, told they were to be sacked, and escorted off the premises without being allowed to return to their desks. Shameful behaviour from a non-profit.

I nominate the ABC’s legal dept for censoring the Gruen Transfer last night. The ad that was pulled was no more offensive than the child-abuse one they aired a couple of weeks ago.

Has John Howards stacking of the ABC board finally started to filter down into programming decisions?
