<p>I&#8217;m taking part in a panel starting at 5pm Thursday, Sydney time: <em>Do Journos Do it Better? Journalists in SocMedia Communities</em>. <a href="http://stilgherrian.com/media/do-journos-do-it-better/">As I&#8217;ve mentioned before</a>, I&#8217;m hoping this moves beyond the stale &#8220;bloggers vs journalists&#8221; (non-)debate.</p>
<p>My fellow panellists are freelance journalist, columnist and blogger <a href="http://twitter.com/miafreedman">Mia Freedman</a>; new media consultant and recovering journalist <a href="http://twitter.com/bronwen">Bronwen Clune</a>; <a href="http://twitter.com/valerioveo">Valerio Veo</a>, who heads up online news and current affairs at <a href="http://www.sbs.com.au">SBS</a>; social media consultant <a href="http://twitter.com/silkcharm">Laurel Papworth</a>; and late addition <a href="http://www.twitter.com/lzion">Dr Lawrie Zion</a> from La Trobe University.</p>
<p>The moderator is Julian Morrow, co-founder of <a href="http://thechaser.com.au/"><em>The Chaser</em></a>, so I suspect they&#8217;re looking for a lighter, end-of-day discussion &#8212; particularly as there&#8217;s a more serious-looking panel earlier in the day called <em>Social Media: Death or Salvation of Professional Journalism?</em></p>
<p>(I&#8217;m not sure why it can&#8217;t be both, death <em>and</em> transformation, but still&#8230; every headline has to be a binary opposite to turn it into winners and losers. Sigh.)</p>

<p><strong>Yesterday I was given a, erm, <a href="http://stilgherrian.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/diarrhoea_chart_1024w.jpg">flowchart for diarrhoea</a>, if you&#8217;ll excuse the phrase. I&#8217;d never realised that diarrhoea needed an instruction manual.</strong></p>
<p>I was also given my vaccinations, as <a href="http://stilgherrian.com/toto/pincushion-day/">foreshadowed</a>. And it&#8217;s all on video, to be published later.</p>
<p>Speaking of video, my diary entry is rather subdued today. Yes, vaccinations do make one feel crap. But I manage to talk about diarrhoea, and about how the online conversation about this project is already taking on a life of it own.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll get that video online as soon as <a href="http://viddler.com">Viddler</a> stops spitting the dummy.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.actionaid.org.au">ActionAid</a> face an interesting challenge in taking on this project.</strong></p>
<p>Their message is no longer being delivered through what the estimable <a href="http://www.bronwenclune.com/">Bronwyn Clune</a> calls <a href="http://www.bronwenclune.com/2008/07/07/we-the-free-media-my-belated-thoughts-on-pubcamp/">control media</a> or what I usually call industrial-age media. They&#8217;re now <em>participants</em> in a social media conversation. Everyone in that conversation is a free agent, capable of saying what they wish &#8212; including myself.</p>
<p>ActionAid will have to overcome the fear of losing control.</p>
<p>Of course, as I explained in <a href="http://stilgherrian.com/internet/the-importance-of-authenticity/">The Importance of Authenticity</a>, they&#8217;ve <em>never</em> had control over what <em>other people</em> might say. It&#8217;s just that now all those ephemeral conversations are visible to everyone on the Internet. It&#8217;ll be interesting to see how a traditionally-structured organisation like ActionAid handles this new environment.</p>

<p><strong>Did people <em>really</em> think I&#8217;d end up brawling with Jason Calacanis at <a href="http://www.cebit.com.au">CeBIT</a> last week? Sure, I called him a <a href="http://stilgherrian.com/human-nature/treat_staff/">prick</a> and wrote about <a href="http://stilgherrian.com/religion/john_calacanis_evil_cult/">the evil cult of the Internet start-up</a>. But he does actually have good points.</strong></p>
<p>I met Mr Calacanis when I found myself recording the <a href="http://2webcrew.thepodcastnetwork.com/2008/05/23/the-2-web-crew-26-jason-calacanis/">2 Web Crew </a> podcast on my borrowed video camera. Since I was concentrating on getting good audio, the vision&#8217;s a bit shaky, but at least you&#8217;ll see what it was like during those hectic 16 minutes.</p>
<p>I may disagree with Calacanis&#8217; priorities in life, but that&#8217;s hardly unique to him. He does do business transparently, however. He makes sense and calls a spade a spade. And he&#8217;s certainly been a successful entrepreneur.</p>
<p>He&#8217;s also a tireless promoter &#8212; of himself. Now that&#8217;s not a bad thing when you&#8217;re trying to build hype around a new business. But it&#8217;s a character trait that Australians reckon is bad &#8212; which is perhaps why we so often fail to market our own innovations.</p>
<p>I was also amused to see the swarm of Calacanis fan-boys and girls buzzing around him &#8220;like flies to a dead sheep&#8221;, as I said on Twitter. Guys, a little less cult of personality and a little more independent thought will work wonders in your lives. Success is not achieved through frottage with the successful. Unless you&#8217;re a hooker.</p>
<p><strong>So, Jason, here is the promised blog post saying that you&#8217;re not as much of a prick as I thought you were.</strong></p>

I met Mr Calacanis when I found myself recording the 2 Web Crew  podcast on my borrowed video camera. Since I was concentrating on getting good audio, the vision&#039;s a bit shaky, but at least you&#039;ll see what it was like during those hectic 16 minutes.

I may disagree with Calacanis&#039; priorities in life, but that&#039;s hardly unique to him. He does do business transparently, however. He makes sense and calls a spade a spade. And he&#039;s certainly been a successful entrepreneur.

He&#039;s also a tireless promoter -- of himself. Now that&#039;s not a bad thing when you&#039;re trying to build hype around a new business. But it&#039;s a character trait that Australians reckon is bad -- which is perhaps why we so often fail to market our own innovations.

I was also amused to see the swarm of Calacanis fan-boys and girls buzzing around him &quot;like flies to a dead sheep&quot;, as I said on Twitter. Guys, a little less cult of personality and a little more independent thought will work wonders in your lives. Success is not achieved through frottage with the successful. Unless you&#039;re a hooker.

So, Jason, here is the promised blog post saying that you&#039;re not as much of a prick as I thought you were.</itunes:summary>
