@elronxenu There are ancient things on this machine. Or were. They’re all gone now.

via Plume for Android in reply to elronxenu

@elronxenu Yes, an in-place a Mavericks upgrade over a rushed in-place upgrade to whatever it was before 2.5 years ago.

via Plume for Android in reply to elronxenu

@elronxenu You’re confusing “need” with “want”. You may have time and mental energy to debug conflicts. A fresh install is quick and easy.

via Plume for Android in reply to elronxenu

@virag064 Ah, I’d have had some weird old 32 bit shit in there somewhere.

via Plume for Android in reply to virag064

So I’m in Chatswood, and will be ambling back via the CBD to Lilyfield. I am open to being bought drinks en route. I hate April cashflows.

via Plume for Android

@garthk It has been noted. Maybe the need will arise, particularly as I start automating some workflows.

@virag064 @akent Agreed re Apple support. They’ve done good for me in the past. I’ll bore people as I go along.

via Plume for Android in reply to virag064

@virtualpete Nah, that’s just one machine swapped out, another in. Doesn’t change timing or risk.

via Plume for Android in reply to virtualpete

@virag064 @akent All your advice is good, but I’m further down the troubleshooting path. I know what I can see in the logs. ;)

via Plume for Android in reply to virag064

@virag064 @akent I have fresh Time Machine backup. I have zero other hardware. And zero funds. And time constraints. This is the way to go.

via Plume for Android in reply to virag064

@virag064 @akent Maybe, but I want an official second opinion. :) The anxiety builds when I’m alone in a gloomy room. Plus, AppleCare.

via Plume for Android in reply to virag064

@virag064 @akent It’s worth Apple ruling out hardware first. And, as I say, they can just reimage it.

via Plume for Android in reply to virag064

@virag064 @akent Oh it boots fine. It goes beachball on certain operations that match where certain legacy stuff would plug in.

via Plume for Android in reply to virag064

@virag064 @akent But a wipe and rebuild takes ages on 6Mbps. Apple Store can reimage fast, and I have AppleCare.

via Plume for Android in reply to virag064

@virag064 @akent This is probably last night’s upgrade to Mavericks (stupid name) gone bad, with legacy cruft from the previous upgrade.

@elliej09 ADSL speed is highly dependent on distance from the exchange and the condition of the copper wiring. Many can’t even get 6Mbps.

via Tweetbot for iOS in reply to elliej09

@elliej09 But I’m not about to do a many-gigabyte system re-installation over 4G.

via Tweetbot for iOS in reply to elliej09

@elliej09 Nothing to be confused about. They’re typical speeds for ADSL2 and an empty 4G network respectively.

via Tweetbot for iOS in reply to elliej09

@elliej09 But even if it is, my very point is that 6Mbps is all that the crap copper in Lilyfield, 3km from an exchange, will deliver.

via Tweetbot for iOS in reply to SnarkyPlatypus

Here I was shouting “Damn! Some arsehole just got the last booking.” That arsehole was me. Joy. I am a happy and successful arsehole.

via Tweetbot for iOS

Oh. Belay that. I seem to have accidentally booked myself into the Apple Store in Chatswood this afternoon. Bonus. They can install fast.

via Tweetbot for iOS

Yep, my main requirement now is fast internets I can connect to for bunch of hours today. No Genius Bar slots available except Castle Hill.

via Tweetbot for iOS

Actually, is there anyone in Sydney with NBN fibre or fast cable I can leech onto for the day? This won’t be fun on Lilyfield’s 6Mbps ADSL.

via Tweetbot for iOS

Actually, let me just read the logs one more time… I’m feeling suddenly afraid.

via Tweetbot for iOS

Ok, I’ve decided. I’m biting the bullet and wiping this machine and starting again. Yes, I just checked my backups.

via Tweetbot for iOS

And there it goes again.

via Tweetbot for iOS

@Nightwyrm @juhasaarinen You’re confusing perfectly normal lack-of-memory performance issues with software bugs, I think.

via Tweetbot for iOS in reply to Nightwyrm

@juhasaarinen Well, this is the hardware I have, so this is what I have to deal with. I could just roll back I guess.

via Tweetbot for iOS in reply to juhasaarinen

@juhasaarinen Given the cruft on this machine, I’m tempted to wipe it and start again, but there’s no going back with that.

via Tweetbot for iOS in reply to juhasaarinen

@juhasaarinen Well I just finally did the jump to Mavericks and something is old and broken. I’ll seek and destroy.

via Tweetbot for iOS in reply to juhasaarinen

@Nightwyrm Sure, but this isn’t about memory. Something is fucking up badly.

via Tweetbot for iOS in reply to Nightwyrm

So it looks like today is going to be about getting that damn computer to be stable again. Very much not in the mood for this.

via Tweetbot for iOS
