@_darrensmith Academics don’t get brownie points for media. Also, the “best” academics in any field aren’t necessarily good storytellers.

via TweetDeck in reply to _darrensmith

Finally, remember to “consume” (ugh!) news to benefit yourself, not the agendas of the news outlets and their sponsors. Have fun. 16/16

via TweetDeck in reply to stilgherrian

Oh, and 4. Having fun and enjoying trash news is just fine. Celebrities, goats in a tree, biggest pumpkin in Albania. It’s all good. 15/

via TweetDeck in reply to stilgherrian

3. Spend a proportion of your time on history as well as current affairs. You’ll notice long-term connections and understand the WHY. 14/

via TweetDeck in reply to stilgherrian

2A, I guess: Do you REALLY need to follow the misery of someone a world away in real time? Sometimes yes. Most times it’s tragedy porn. 13/

via TweetDeck in reply to stilgherrian

2. Prefer longer-form slow-cycle journalist and current affairs (“slow news”) to rolling news, unless it’s relevant to your interests. 12/

via TweetDeck in reply to stilgherrian

1. Prefer specialist or credible close-the-action news outlets rather than goldfish-brained news-bleaters a continent away. 11/

via TweetDeck in reply to stilgherrian

So in general, and before I bore you much more, I reckon there’s three broad rules to follow… 10/

via TweetDeck in reply to stilgherrian

Implications for Australia, you say? Listen to people from @LowyInstitute or whatever, not a stenographer of politicians’ daily squawks. 9/

via TweetDeck in reply to stilgherrian

Why read “analysis” of what’s happening in Washington from some night-shift horse-race caller rather than experienced DC reporters? 8/

via TweetDeck in reply to stilgherrian

Why read some general journo’s take on a military issue when the military news mastheads and blogs cover it with depth and knowledge? 7/

via TweetDeck in reply to stilgherrian

In general, I go for specialist or in-country mastheads rather than local Australian mainstream outlets, at least if I want depth. 6/

via TweetDeck in reply to stilgherrian

But even then, I tend to read longer, slower-cycle stuff. Weekly not daily, for example. Current affairs not news. 5/

via TweetDeck in reply to stilgherrian

If I need / want to know about something else in more depth, it’s then that I bother reading things in more depth. 4/

via TweetDeck in reply to stilgherrian

Similarly, if it’s related to my work, I’ll dig into it immediately. That’s a mercenary ROI decision, though I’m also a curious soul. 3/

via TweetDeck in reply to stilgherrian

If there’s some that has real-time implications, or will give me a quick burst of understanding, I’ll pull up a live video/audio feed. 2/

via TweetDeck in reply to stilgherrian

Anyway, I usually only skim the daily news headlines. If something big is happening I’ll know from Twitter. 1/
