The Great Wall of Sydney

The Great Wall of Sydney by Trinn Suwannapha

’Pong has started photographing The Great Wall of Sydney which descended with the start of APEC — naturally bringing his own “urban abstract” eye to the game.

Police have been deleting photos from cameras, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens when ’Pong returns to The APEC Zone tonight now that GWB has arrived.

When I phoned the police media liaison unit today, I didn’t get a very clear message about what was and wasn’t permitted. It all seems to be at the discretion of the officer on the ground. To me that just says “arbitrary” and “unaccountable” — and combining that with arrest-without-charge and the suspension of habeas corpus spells “danger”.

Anyway, check ’Pong’s images — and don’t forget to click through for the full-sized beauty.

Why try to save a pigeon?

I loathe pigeons. “Skyrats,” I call them, and I annoy ’Pong by chasing them into oncoming buses. But yesterday we found a pigeon struggling to walk because its legs had become entangled in string or something — and we tried to catch it to set it free. Why did we bother? Logically, it’s inconsistent. What does that say about us?

Stilgherrian Simpsonsized

Stilgherrian as a Simpsons character

’Pong and I have just let The Simpsons Movie and Burger King absorb an hour of our valuable attention in exchange for turning us into yellow-skinned characters. Simpsonize Me is a promotional tool for the film, but one which gives you a toy to play with — the ability to turn your photos into characters from The Simpsons — in exchange for a bit of brand reinforcement.

I reckon this is how “interactive advertising” has to work. A fair exchange of value. As opposed to Audi’s over-produced self-indulgent wank, where they get your psychometric profile and you get — well, nothing.

The question now, of course: How good a match for me is the character I’ve made? Comments?

’Pong’s “Anywhere Chairs” online!

Sample image from Anywhere ChairsIt’s done! ’Pong has completed his short film Anywhere Chairs, which he made as part of the Sydney Songlines project. You have to put up with my narration, I’m afraid.

(I wrote about this project when he started it and when I found myself discussing the motivations of a chair. I should have also written about how all-consuming it’s been for the last few weeks!)

Interesting Geekfacts: The whole film was shot on a Nokia N90, one of the first Nseries “multimedia” phones (2 megapixels from a Carl Zeiss pimple-lens). Post-production was in iMovie HD 6 and GarageBand 3. It was converted to Flash Video for the web using ffmpegx.

Does a chair have a motivation?

I’m a broken chair, abandoned in the street. Other rubbish is piled with me — household items that aren’t worth keeping, but not quite so useless that they go straight into the garbage. Am I happy to be with them, glad of their company? Is the imminent arrival of the garbage truck something to fear, or a long-sought-for liberation?

I’ve just finished recording the narration for ’Pong’s Anywhere Chairs, the short film that’s emerging from his Sydney Songlines project. And I’ve found myself in serious discussions about the emotional state and motivations of… an abandoned chair.

I bet Nicole Kidman doesn’t have this kind of problem.
