Live Blog: Media 09

This Friday 13 February I’m liveblogging from Media 09, billed as “the Annual Forecast for Digital Media Professionals”.

The event runs all day from 9am to 5pm Sydney time, and I’ll cover as much as I can. Bookmark this page and come back on the day. I’ll also issue reminders via my Twitter stream and tag everything #media09.

I’m rather amused that the event is being staged by Fairfax Digital, since arguably they’re well behind Murdoch’s News Limited. Maybe they wanted expert advice, couldn’t afford it, so decided to invite others and charge admission.

One keynote speaker is Ben Self, Director and Founding Partner of Blue State Digital, the guy who ran Barack Obama’s online campaign.

[Update: In the liveblog transcript, any text in black that isn’t labelled is from me. The blue comments are from others.]

  1. Stil,

thanks for doing this. The BDS speaker was good value. In the afternoon speakers, and with the benefit of hindsight, did any of them stand out in some (good) way. Was there a differentiator, a clear special insight or understanding that separated them from the pack?

  2. Liveblogging is exhausting. You not only have to listen, you have to summarise and then regurgitate your thoughts almost instantly. No chance for reflection. It goes for hours. And people expect you to be intelligent.

I therefore wonder whether the more cynical observations on the afternoon sessions are more a result of tiredness than their inherent lameness — though that said, I do think it’s a bit lame for a conference presenter to just show their agency’s showreel.

Please, don’t just show your stuff. Explain how you reached the decision to do it that way. Tell us how successful or not it was. Give us some value we can take with us — rather than something could have been a few links in a blog post.

One highlight of the showreels, though, was the viral (fuck I hate that term!) video for Freixenet champagne produced by JWT Barcelona. Directed by Martin Scorsese, its conceit is that it’s Scorsese directing a “lost” Hitchcock movie. Wonderful!

@wraptinweb: I reckon I’ll do some reflection and more writing tomorrow. I might also correct some of the more appalling typos in the liveblog.

  3. Great job.

I’ve tried to liveblog similar events before, and never as well. I’d been planning on doing this one. But one of the reasons I didn’t come down in the end (apart from the fact that the speakers were sounding lame) was that you were doing such a good job it would have been very difficult to add any further value.

    Cheers,

    Tim – Mumbrella

  4. @Tim Burrowes: Thanks. I think skipping the afternoon was a good choice on your part. Vendors pimping their products, agencies running their showreels and one presentation which was beamed in from another planet.

Now, to find the time to collate my thoughts on this…
