The 9pm 57 Varieties of Thai with Erin Cook

A white woman with her long brown hair tied back wears a yellow and black top, sunglasses, and a smile like the Mona Lisa. Behind her stretches out a view of a tropical landscape and, eventually, the ocean. It?s Erin Cook!

With Thailand’s general election just over a week away, I figured it’s time once more to chat with journalist Erin Cook, who specialises in South-East Asia. But as always we talk about much more than just Thailand.

Weekly Wrap 817: Just look at the state of things!

Looking through the gap in a very rickety wooden fence, across an overgrown lawn, to a pair of tiny old sheds made of fibreboard or possibly asbestos, with broken windows and collapsing, rusty iron roofs.

My week of Monday 19 to Sunday 25 January 2026 was relatively quiet with lots of naps. But some planning was done, and the weather turned from wet to hot. Keep it clean, OK?

Weekly Wrap 816: A podcast, and far too much rain

Looking out through the coach window all is wet. Streams of water run down the window. Everything is grey and blurry. A white van can just be made out, its shape rippled and distorted.

My week of Monday 12 to Sunday 18 January 2026 was wet, particular in the second half. However I did produce a podcast, I had an extensive medical screening for a vaccine trial, and we resumed apartment-hunting for the new year in between Saturday’s pouring rain.

The 9pm Unnatural Act with a Pig with Patrick Stokes

A middle-aged white man with a greying beard and neat black spectacles wears a black collarless top. He looks at the camera with thoughtful scepticism.

Don’t let the title put you off, nor attract you too eagerly. The 9pm Summer Series 2025 continues with philosopher, reprobate, and all-round cleverthinker Patrick Stokes, and a conversation about many, many things. He’s also half of The Fake McCoys.

Weekly Wrap 815: Easing into 2016 with heat and long naps

Black and white photo. The upper third is the lower part of the side a caravan, with a tyre visible on the right. The foreground is all overgrown grass of various kinds, with flowers and seeds visible. And on the grass, a grey and white cat stands looking at us.

I’ve been back in the Blue Mountains all this week, Monday 5 to Sunday 11 January 2026, but a combination of fatigue and then overly-warm weather means there’s little new to report. I did bring The Weekly Cybers newsletter back earlier than planned, however.

Weekly Wrap 814: Happy New Year with belated pelicans

A small stone quay at the side of an estuary, water on the left, and a pathway and then lawn on the right. On the quay, four pelicans stand looking at the water, one with its wings outstretched. On the water a group of five pelicans look back. Half a dozen tourists stand watching the scene.

Happy New Year. My week of Monday 29 December 2025 to Sunday 4 January 2026 was suitably recreational, although I did insert some podcast post-production — with the result that you have our Bingo Card discussion. The pelicans are from last week
