The other day I “ran into” journalist Samela Harris online. She’s now a senior writer for Murdochland in Adelaide. Not long later, the following appeared at Adelaide Now.
Stilgherrian once was cherished name in South Australia –- until he the Gawler-born boy drifted east to make further fame and fortune. The former radio personality has maintained a status of significant stir both in the modern alternative media and the constantly evolving world of geekdom. “Sa”, as she’s affectionately known, is daughter of the famous (infamous?) Australian man of letters, Max Harris — who once snuck up behind me and, with a swift underhand stroke of his silver-tipped cane, caught me fair on the balls. Ouch.
Is she still wearing those over-sized sunglasses from her Advertiser staff photos of the eighties and nineties now that the awful things are back in vogue with young women? Never saw her without them.
Her website would suggest nothing’s changed.
I remember her!!! *reminisces* I won some wine in a competition she ran. I had to put a funny caption to a photo – I still have the clipping. I think it was in the ’80s. Yep it would’ve been.
Did you know I used to be a “Rosemary” for the Advertiser? *sings* I’ll be calling you-oo-ooo”. I went on to bigger and better things. Heh.

So, do you resemble either James McAuley or Harold Stewart from behind, or is this some habit peculiar to SA (like digging up long dead politicians for paternity tests)?

@Laurel Papworth: Sa’s column was kind of the equivalent to Column 8 in the Sydney Morning Herald, but with a good deal more intelligence.
@Speedicut: Oh dear! I think I’d better link to an explanation of the Ern Malley affair for the background on that one! Incidentally, Sa’s blog is called Angry Penguin too. And she’s on Twitter.
Re the cane attack, I suspect it was more than at the time I was in my mid-20s and had a trimmer bottom. Perhaps from behind it was all too tempting for The Great Man. He was a wonderful practical joker.
@Stilgherrian: That’s not exactly true. I never imagined rising property values would turn my old bogan heartland of Hackham West into the new Henley Beach, but that’s where it’s heading. To think only 25 short years ago the neighbourhood was a skanky sea of mullets, flannelet shirts, broken homes and empty wallets.
Actually, maybe it’s only that last one that’s changed at all.
