Serco loses its call centre contract, the RAAF gets 9 Squadron back, Google tries to redirect criticism, and some interesting new legislation hits the table.
Here’s what I’ve noticed since the previous edition on 9 June:
- Google says Australia’s online privacy law should target websites instead of search engines, because of course they do.
- The Royal Australian Air Force has reactivated 9 Squadron to fly the Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton high-altitude long-endurance (HALE) unmanned aerial vehicle.
- “More than 600 call centre staff working on Services Australia lines outsourced to international managed services provider and prison operator Serco are set to lose their jobs after a $343 million contract with the welfare agency was not renewed.”
- Senator Sarah Henderson introduced the Broadcasting Services Amendment (Ban on Gambling Advertisements During Live Sport) Bill 2023.
- Senator Sarah Hanson-Young introduced the Murdoch Media Inquiry Bill 2023, but personally I don’t think that’s going to go anywhere.
- Meanwhile in the reps we have the Counter-Terrorism Legislation Amendment (Prohibited Hate Symbols and Other Measures) Bill 2023.
Please let me know if I’ve missed anything, or if there’s any specific items you’d like me to follow. There’s one more week of Parliament to go before the winter break.
