Weekly Wrap 751: My busy holiday certainly didn’t dragon

My week of Monday 14 to Sunday 20 October 2024 was spent on holiday in Queensland, and now it’s already the following Tuesday. I’ll tell you more about the holiday another time, but right now here’s a shorter Weekly Wrap.

Articles

  • The Weekly Cybers #40. A short edition this week with news of Australia’s first AI-generated political ad, changes to My Health Record, plus social media, telco risk, AI, and rogue robot vacuum cleaners.

We’re two days late, so at the time of writing we’re only 14 days out from the US election. Elon Musk continues to become more weird.

In other news, well, once again I’ll skip this section because we’re so late.

The Week Ahead

Well it’s already Tuesday evening, so I can “predict” with some confidence that on Monday I’ll be flying (will have flown) from the Gold Coast to Sydney and staying (stayed) overnight before finally catching the train back to the Blue Mountains and easing back into work mode.

Wednesday and Thursday will see a focus on client work and podcast planning, mapping out the rest of the spring series of The 9pm Edict.

The 9pm Edict is supported by the generosity of its listeners. You can always throw a few coins into the tip jar or subscribe for special benefits. Please consider.

On Friday I’m heading to Sydney for various purposes, including Competition in cyberspace and the future of US security leadership at the US Studies Centre. It’s a conversation with  Admiral (ret) Mike Rogers, former director of the US National Security Agency and former commander of US Cyber Command.

On Sunday I’ll head down to Sydney again, but this time for a a good couple of weeks — until around 18 November in fact. As I’ve mentioned before, my plans include eventually moving back to the city after far too long in the Mountains.

Further Ahead

  • Australian Internet Governance Forum (auIGF) 2024, formerly known as NetThing, Melbourne and online, 28–29 October 2024 (TBC).
  • Victoria expedition, 6–9 December 2024. Includes a friend’s birthday event on the Mornington Peninsula Friday 6 to Sunday 8, heading to Melbourne for social things on Sunday night before flying back to Sydney on Monday evening. This trip will almost burn off the last of my frequent flyer points from the Beforetimes, when I used to do a lot more travelling.
