Just two sleeps to go! With the election day this Saturday 21 May, and with the polls showing a solid chance of a Labor win, the unhinging continues on all sides. Let’s talk about that, and other things.
In episode we talk about the ongoing corflute wars, a certain terrible election advertisement, Scott Morrison’s love of focus groups, his character, and the Coalition’s housing policy. There’s even a brief visit from George W Bush.

[18 May 2022] This clip from the ABC archive has finally made me lose my mind. In 1983 the federal government would pay a first homebuyer $3,500 to sign a contract on a $36,000 home. Weekly repayments on your loan would be $53.80, or 16% of average income.
-
[17 May 2022] On the weekend, the Coalition launched its campaign, just six days before the election. The centrepiece of the launch was a new housing policy, which it promises will help more young people to buy a home, by allowing them to take money out of their superannuation. But will the scheme really help new home buyers or is it too little, too late?
-
[15 May 2022] Some thoughts on this policy from an economist-turned-super writer: 1) Super for housing renders some funds’ investment strategies unworkable. More than 50pc of members at Rest & Hostplus are under 35. Funds can’t invest in high-return illiquid assets if they need cash on hand.
-
[16 May 2022] You have to at least acknowledge the sheer, staggering genius of working out how to fuck an entire generation coming, going and on the way through. Young people have a lifetime ahead of paying for the privilege of handing their own wealth over to older Australia.
-
[16 May 2022] Morrison says the Coalition will not share modelling on the impact the super for housing scheme would have on housing prices... He says modelling will not be provided as he does not want to “give them currency” in addressing criticism about the scheme. “I simply just don’t agree with the assertion that this would have a negative impact because you have to look at the balance of policies that this is addressing,” the prime minister says.

[17 May 2022] This election provides a clear choice, with real consequences for Australia. We are delivering a strong economy and a stronger future. Anthony Albanese and Labor would weaken our economy and put Australia’s recovery at risk. In uncertain times, it won't be easy under Albanese.

In Garbett v Liu [2019] FCAFC 241 (24 December 2019) at [91] the Full Federal Court explained: ‘In s 329(1) the phrase “likely to mislead or deceive an elector” means a real chance of misleading or deceiving any elector, even one who is unintelligent, or gullible, or naïve.’ This decision provides a new judicial precedent that is important to understand for electoral campaigning now and in the future.

[13 May 2022] During a 90-minute focus group that news.com.au observed on Thursday night, the voters assembled by the RedBridge group returned again and again to perceptions of the Prime Minister’s character. The words they use to describe him: Arrogant. Selfish. Inflexible. Obnoxious. A bad leader. A wannabe.
