Well then. It happened. Anthony Albanese is Prime Minister and Australia has a new Labor government. There’s a sense of hope in the air, but there’s also a sense of hesitation.
In episode we talk about the election result, obviously. We also talk about the unhinging of the conservative commentators, especially those on Sky News Australia, about the problems in political journalism, international relations, potential changes in the National Party, and US politician Kandiss Taylor.

-
[25 May 2022] It was the question that encapsulated the poverty of political journalism over the last 3 years, which reached its nadir during this election campaign. Barrie Cassidy called out this ‘bizarre’ election night reporting, the reluctance to acknowledge Labor’s victory, the focus on Liberal party failure and the rise of the teal independents, rather than Labor’s success; ‘There’s barely any mention that we have a new government’ Cassidy lamented. Instead, the loss of one particular seat, Labor’s candidate Kristina Keneally to Independent Dai Le in Fowler, was taken as reflective of an entire party failure – despite the election victory. It left no room for acknowledging either that Labor ran a disciplined, focused, campaign or its key policy differences in areas that mattered most to voters – cost of living, childcare, free TAFE, climate change, aged care, health care and committing to the Uluru statement from the heart.
-
[20 May 2022] The mainstream media’s coverage of the 2022 Federal election has been a disgrace to the profession of journalism and a stain on our democracy.
-
[18 May 2022] For all the millions of dollars ploughed into this campaign by billionaire heir Simon Holmes a Court and other wealthy donors, the Teals may not actually win a single seat.
-
[25 May 2022] I hope everyone’s ready for all the ‘Albo is Harry Potter and Dutton is Voldemort’ discourse and memes
-
Still amused by the sheer lameness of this front page.
-
[26 May 2022] The Australian depicts Dutton as Lurch in a cartoon today. I guess if the reference is a bit more dated it is fine.
-
[25 May 2022] The pattern was set early on: unimaginative, slavish PR-stunt footage of the leaders, combined with young go-getters in the travelling media packs trying to make a name for themselves with gotcha questions.
-
[18 May 2022] Sky News host Chris Smith says Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese’s intention to fly to Japan next Tuesday if he is elected as prime minister “is like going to Hawaii on steroids”.
-
[24 May 2022] So @andrewprobyn and @BreakfastNews - re the line this morning "Albanese has spent more time as PM in Japan than Australia" - maybe worth noting or pointing out that Morrison knew of the quad timing and could have called the election date 1 week earlier.... @mjrowland68
-

-

-
[22 May 2022] After their company-wide campaign to prevent the election of a Labor Govt, the Murdoch monopoly isn’t taking it well. Just take a look at Murdoch’s positioning for the next 3 years.
-
[28 May 2022] Peter Dutton has declared there is more to him than his tough side, as he formally announces he will stand for the Liberal leadership.
-
[20 August 2018] Peter Dutton was one of only a handful of MPs who refused to attend Kevin Rudd’s apology to the Stolen Generation in 2008. That’s right, on one of the most important days in our Parliament’s history, he was nowhere to be found.
-
[22 May 2022] Of all the takes, my favourite is ‘Australia voted for more progressive candidates because the Coalition government was too progressive and therefore the answer for the Coalition is to go further to the right to win back the Australian people.’ Galaxy level. More please.
-

-
[24 May 2022] The Nationals have changed tack …their sole purpose under people like John Anderson was to keep the Liberals in Government and pick up some crumbs…with Joyce their sole purpose is to keep the Liberals out of Government and pick up zilch.A dipstick looking for sump.

-
[22 May 2022] “When they thought I couldn’t withstand the storm…that I am the storm." Deves avoided questions for weeks and immediately after losing goes on a panel show that showers her in false praise. Not exactly storm chasing.
-
[22 May 2022] A 4.7% swing against her means that Deves is more of a windbag than a storm.
-
[23 May 2022] GA Gov candidate Kandiss Taylor says she will execute Sheriffs by firing squad if they don’t “do the will of the people. I don’t mind handcuffing them either .. The Constitution says when you commit treason, it’s death by firing squad. I didn’t write it - it’s in there.”
-
[23 May 2022] GA GOP Gov candidate Kandiss Taylor today: “We’re gonna do a political rally and we’re gonna honor Jesus .. They’re not gonna tell us ‘separation of church and state.’ We are the church! We run this state! .. The church runs the state of Georgia!”

-
[23 May 2022] For those on the Left and progressive civil society in Australia, it will be important to try to create conditions for a more confident and ambitious government. Unlike 2007, there is no public optimism or fanfare that greeted Labor’s win. It may mean a cautious government that seeks to avoid repeating the backlashes of the Rudd-Gillard-Rudd government from vested interests to stay in office.
-
[23 May 2022] The Australian election saw historic defeats for the Murdoch media and the country’s right wing. But if the Labor Party is to really bring about change, it needs to fight for transformative economic policies.
-
