@julesoir Final reflections? I’ve only just finished copy to run later today Syd time. Is this the true future, no time to reflect? #fom08
@jedwhite Did anyone ever extract/post my, um, “polite interjection” from #pubcamp? I think I want to quote a bit in my Crikey piece today.
@jeffsonstein Oh feel free to point as many people as you like to my rant! And encourage comments! The more the merrier…
@SnarkyPlatypus You know, I do like your horoscope for today. There may be an extraordinary energy surge tomorrow, it says. Weekend FTW!
Reading comments on my article at Crikey.com.au http://is.gd/UuS and my website http://is.gd/UuU Nice mixed bag! #fom08
@leehopkins Trevor Cook’s piece is wonderful in that regard, makes the point strongly. “Medal for that man there!”
@jeffsonstein @lewellyn May it’s me, but “meatspace impacts” sounds like a dodgy euphemism for “rough sex”.
Emerges. 0630. 8C outside. By chance the first thing I read is about a rape being downplayed to “protect” the church. http://is.gd/Vf9 Hi.
Q: Why is the Papal Mass being held at Randwick Racecourse? A: It’s the only place you can legally ride a 3yo.
@Nickhodge What is it with you and women on TV called Ali(son)?
At The Duke, Narelle (manager) & I observe that male contestants on So You Think You Can Dance all have trouble with their shirts.
I’ve suggested that just before the train arrives shout: Look! That ballast rock is shaped like the Virgin Mary! A miracle!
@SnarkyPlatypus has been trapped at Circular Quay station by the pilgrims.
Departing to join @SnarkyPlatypus in the development of themes and arches. And dinner.
@gnoll110 Y’see, I read “NCA” as “National Crime Authority” not “National Capital Authority”… very different…
Retweeting @rosshill: I make a living by pushing plastic buttons all day. http://tinyurl.com/6rzry3 And so do I, mby and large…
@SnarkyPlatypus There’s almost no gym time left, eating into gin time. THIS IS TEH SERIOUSNESS!!1!
@wolfcat You were TYPING WITH ONE HAND while commenting on my website? Sir, it’s not THAT kind of website! Please adjust your dress! ;)
@SnarkyPlatypus I think there were several points in his rant, actually. All jumbled up together into an incoherent splatter of bile.
My Newest Best Friend his obviously Simon Mansfield. Another, longer comment from him! http://tinyurl.com/5kxro6 #fom08
@SnarkyPlatypus Hi. I have made many new friends today amongst teh journalismz tribez. ;) http://is.gd/UuS
@matthewlandauer Google is teh mysteriez… ;)
@matthewlandauer It may be a bit new for Google to have done link-tracking on http://openaustralia.org … used to take 6 to 8 weeks.
@Colgo The Harvard Business Review article you mention is free online: “Should You Invest in the Long Tail?” http://is.gd/UBg
@sboiling @mpesce Yes, the Simon Mansfield at http://tinyurl.com/5bkxmo would be http://is.gd/UAB He linked to a space news site.
@bronwen The “divide” is spurious: it’s all writing about current events for your audience. One side calls its version “journalism”. #fom08
@bronwen Cheers, Bronwen! I’m thoroughly amazed at how polarised the discussion / response is. Still. None of this is new! #fom08
@mpesce I don’t know about eyeballs. I am a blogger, though, so apparently I can just make stuff up. http://tinyurl.com/5bkxmo #fom08
@Colgo And when everyone has the publishing tech, interesting stuff is findable, even when it isn’t bundled into a major brand. #fom08
@Colgo MSM does (for now) have more eyeballs. Will this always be the case? Dunno. It’d be a mistake to presume long-term dominance. #fom08
Retweet @crikey_news: Crikey’s coverage of Sen Penny Wong’s #greenpaper is now live at http://tinyurl.com/5ar82e Free.
@DavidVandenberg Cheers! Writing with passion, automatically more engaging, is something “journalists” think is a Bad Thing. [yawn] #fom08
Gosh, back at my desk, what a bunch of blog comments to approve… I’m making lots of new friends today… ;) http://is.gd/UuS #fom08
@mpesce Last night spoke with guys from Stripe internet radio. G Wheatley and another name mentioned. Not sure if latter on record.
@sboiling @mpesce Gee, Glen Wheatley’s enthusiasm for internet radio as iPhone killer app wd have NOTHING to do with his investment in IR?
@jacquimcgirr @mpesce Isn’t the term “a blind faith of pilgrims”?
Being a complete hypocrite and reading Monday’s Sydney Morning Herald over lunch. AFK.
Indonesian.
(As an aside, since when did expressing your Catholicism become a reason for rampant nationalism?)
Warning: hordes of green clad Polish pilgrims in Newtown. Or Indonesian. Which way do the flags go?
@andrewbarnett Yer, plummeting production & distribution costs mean local can be more viab#fom08om08
@jeamland @DenubisX @jodiem Thanks for compliments. If ever doubt, now NO chance of me ever working in mainstream media again. ;)
“Note to ‘old media’ journalists: adapt, or stfu!” Read it at Crikey.com.au http://is.gd/UuS or my website http://is.gd/UuU …enjoy! #fom08
Wandering on errands to Enmore Rd / King St before discovering what Crikey did with my rant about #fom08 … ;)
@RachB Can’t remember which sessions’ audio worked for me, had probs. Won’t get a chance to deal with it until tonight. Clients… :/ #fom08
The guys from Sticky Advertising, Newcastle, have posted some good thoughts from yesterday. http://is.gd/UtC #fom08
@RachB Hiya, some of yesterday’s recordings are linked off http://pollenizer.com/ch… and I have some too but not yet sorted. #fom08
@lewellyn Glad that http://twittersnooze.com worked, it’s always a risk recommending something I’ve never actually tried myself. ;)
@seancarmody Sean, yes, excellent to meet you too. A bunch of faces-to-names yesterday, which was good. :)
I just did an 800-word rant for Crikey.com.au about the Future of Journalism. Not sure if they’ll run it. I didn’t swear TOO much. ;) #fom08
@garthk Wikipedia’s worried about “authority” when they have whole pages dedicated to minor characters in Sci-Fi TV shows? What wankers!
@garthk Huh! So “oral traditions” still don’t count unless they’re written down, even if they ARE written down? Wikipedia is teh weird.
@jeffsonstein @mpesce @garthk I’ve already done my quota of media manipulation this week, I think. ;) Fail Whale, I canna save ye!
Actually, it’s the Blue FIG Cafe, not the “Blue Fug”. Unless you’re from New Zealand. Or if the fug was, oh, a dark foreboding grey.
Migrating to Blue Fug Cafe, Enmore Road.
@trib Try http://quotably.com/stil… for starters, will give you some threading.
OK, Thurs plan (finally!): AM client proposal; PM project mgt (at desk or Afternoon Office?); Stilgherrian Live Alpha ep 6 at 9.30pm AEST.
Now everyone who’s said something about journalism comment at Crikey.com.au http://is.gd/UuS or my site http://is.gd/UuU so I look good.
@bronwen You know, @jeffsonstein seems OK, for an American. ;) He’s a bit weird tho, and a geek.
Retweet @dnwallace: “That’s right, things are messy, out of our control… I know, lets create a new taxonomy.” ROFL! Yes, I am a geek. ;)
@lewellyn “Troublemaker” more appropriate, perhaps. ;)
@lewellyn No not a journalist here, never have been nor claimed to be. When with ABC was “producer” or “broadcaster”. “Writer” now maybe.
Retweet @bronwen: ‘Many journalists “natural curiosity” may be piqued when they find themselves irrelevant.’ [smirks] Indeed. ;)
@lewellyn All journalists are, by definition, pedophiles yes. There, more search-engine fodder. ;) All hail Eris!
@bronwen Agreed, and will YOU STFU too, ‘cos I have a shower to have and a proposal to write. STOP BEING INTERESTING!
@bronwen We’ve confused things by using the same word (“blog”) to describe the tool and the role, like calling journalists “typists”.
@bronwen We clearly need a new taxonomy here. Trad media has journalist vs columnist, op ed pieces, leaders etc.
@bronwen Journalists are using “blogger” as general (disparaging) term for anything online, and then equating that with the cat-mum-diaries.
@bronwen I am using “journalist” = someone in trad/control organisation, yes, since in these forum they don’t like other using the word.
@DCouch Agree that Journalist = Trusted Source is comforting. One True Voice. That = Priesthood Syndrome tho.
@DCouch It’s “Old vs New, objective reporting vs subjective”, yes, but my point is also about why journalists aren’t embracing new tools.
@acatinatree [smirks] That article IS my #pubcamp rant, yes. I just haven’t had the solitude & headspace for reflective writing, ‘tis all.
@jeffsonstein Haven’t got and “new/old journo links related to social networking: to offer offhand, sorry. @SilkCharm will though.
@Mediamum While few bloggers seem to appreciate the work that goes into original reportage… not that much journalism IS this, of course.
@Mediamum Journalists lump all bloggers into the category of cat-mum-diaries and unsubstantiated opinion, seem unaware of the best of blogs.
@Mediamum I’m starting to get a feel for why the discussion gets so heated… both sides start with wrong-headed notions the other’s worth.
@jeffsonstein A seminar question, then: Compare and explain the difference in comment style/content between the two postings of the article.
@jeffsonstein Also see Amy Gahran’s piece “Journalism: A Toxic Culture? (Or: Why Aren’t We Having More Fun?)” http://is.gd/Vib
@jeffsonstein Since Crikey is read by pretty much every journo in Australia I’m expecting further feedback today. I’ll write a follow-up.
