Most of my week of Monday 8 to 14 November 2021 was spent in Orange in NSW’s Central Tablelands. Primarily it was about recording a podcast with Fr Karl Sinclair, and you’ll hear that next week. But getting out of the house proved to be remarkably beneficial to be psychologically.
I will admit that my choice of photos for this post is odd. I took so many wonderful images while in Orange, mostly of the gold rush era architecture. But on my journey back to Wentworth Falls I was struck by the imagery as the train traversed the landscape that had been ravaged by the bushfires of 2019–2020.
Podcasts
- The 9pm Extra: Keep the Bastards Honest episode 5, “The Murder on Thursday Law with Stilgherrianâ€, being the podcast of the revived political party, the Australian Democrats. This was recorded way back on 14 October but posted this week.
- The 9pm Bludger’s Art of Lying with John Birmingham, recorded on Friday afternoon.
The 9pm Edict is supported by the generosity of its listeners. You can always subscribe for special benefits or throw a few coins into the tip jar. Please consider.
Photos
- I have updated my Waratah sequence 2021 for another week. The photos now span 75 days, and yet the flower in question is still hanging on.
I’ll post some photos from my trip to Orange during the coming week, because I think you deserve more than just a dying waratah flower. It was a wonderful week.

- Paul Keating addresses National Press Club of Australia. It’s always worth listening to a former prime minister, but this week Keating showed that he can still deliver the sound bites.
- The ABC’s Rear Vision is always good, but the episode Anti-corruption commissions — ‘star chambers’ or the best way to ensure integrity in public life? was remarkable relevant to current events.
- A secret tape made after Columbine shows the NRA’s evolution on school shootings.
- As Paul Fenwick tweeted, “Everyone is sharing the fancy new video about how mRNA vaccines work, but they haven’t even seen the original?” Check it out!
The Week Ahead
It’s a collision of conferences this week, with the Australian Cyber Conference running Tuesday through Wednesday, and the Australian Strategic Policy Institute’s inaugural The Sydney Dialogue Wednesday through Friday.
Later in the week I’m editing and posting the podcast with Fr Karl Sinclair (@FrKarlSinclair) that I recorded in Orange. Some surprising bits to the conversation.
Somewhere in there I’ll have to tackle the somewhat-delayed geekery for a client, and get some writing done for ZDNet. Here’s hoping my anxiety levels stay relatively low.
And finally, all this week it’s both FrogID Week and Wild Pollinator Count. I haven’t participated yet but I will certainly do so.
Further Ahead
- Podcast recording with apace archaeologist Dr Alice Gorman (@drspacejunk) who’s been on the pod before in 2018 and 2020, 23 November 2021.
- NSW local government elections, 4 December 2021.
- linux.conf.au 2022, online, 14–16 January 2022 (TBC).
- APRICOT 2022 / APNIC 53, 28 February to 4 March 2022 approx.
