Not a lot this week. We have government responses to reviews of the Privacy Act and the powers of the AFP, and some commentary on the proposed online gambling and anti-misinformation laws. The Privacy Act thing is pretty big.
Here’s what I’ve noticed since the previous edition on 29 September, just a few nuggets among the deluge of stories about the Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum.
- We finally have the government response to the Privacy Act Review Report. I haven’t had time to go through it, so here’s some analysis by law firm Gilbert+Tobin and the International Association of Privacy Professionals.
- We also have the government response to the review of Australian Federal Police powers.
- The proposed online gambling law provides a carve-out, but lotteries should not be exempt from credit card ban for online gambling, experts say. These experts are “financial counsellors, anti-gambling advocates and industry competitors, according to the Guardian.
- The Graun also has some discussion of the exposure draft (PDF) of the Communications Legislation Amendment (Combatting Misinformation and Disinformation) Bill 2023. It’s not only the social media platforms who don’t like it.
Please let me know if I’ve missed anything, or if there’s any specific items you’d like me to follow. Parliament is still on break for another week, until 16 October.
