@seancarmody Digging out some of them now, I can see it was Tristram Cary’s “Doctor Who” soundtracks that were the scariest for me as a kid.

via Janetter for Mac in reply to seancarmody

@seancarmody To be honest I can’t really remember much. It was just for a few weeks over summer to get some specific sounds working.

via Janetter for Mac in reply to seancarmody

@seancarmody Oh do as you wish with the counts, they’re public data.

via Janetter for Mac in reply to seancarmody

@seancarmody It was always hard to tell with Tristram Cary ‘cos he was a hardware hacker and everything was always modded to buggery.

via Janetter for Mac in reply to seancarmody

@seancarmody Ah! This is what I was programming! A Synclavier II, methinks. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synclavier

via Janetter for Mac in reply to seancarmody

@seancarmody I haven’t, no. I wonder whether BBC Radiophonic Workshop will make it into the grand history of 20th century music.

via Janetter for Mac in reply to seancarmody

@seancarmody Hah! Hardly. I was just trying to get some FFT code to run faster. Or something. It was a long time ago.

via Janetter for Mac in reply to seancarmody

@BernardKeane As a kid, I always thought snubbing was something you did with your nose in long grass, or mud.

via Janetter for Mac in reply to BernardKeane

@seancarmody This was for the illustrious Tristram Cary, ex-BBC Radiophonic Workshop. It was FM-synth and PL/1. And we had a Fairlight.

via Janetter for Mac in reply to seancarmody

@seancarmody I seem to recall programming FM-synth bell sounds for a Fairlight CMI in PL/1, but maybe I’m conflating two machines…

via Janetter for Mac in reply to seancarmody

@tweetingtechno No. I’m a big fan of science. Even when those atheist arsehats pervert it into exclusionist politics.

So this is what it’s like to be sober.

RT @jonoabroad: do you ever worry you’ll confuse the edict and patch Monday? [Not at all, same as don’t confuse sitting on sofa or toilet.]

via Janetter for Mac in reply to jonoabroad

@jeamland It’s true. I am a clueless programmer.

via Janetter for Mac in reply to jeamland

Methinks I’ll just document what I’ve done, collapse, and get up early to be creative with a podcast.

via Janetter for Mac

So, I have successfully Done Things by patching source code. I feel like I should buy a chainsaw or something now.

via Janetter for Mac

It says “patching file mod_auth_mysql.c”, so the security of this web server is completely guaranteed. [nods]

via Janetter for Mac

@terrymarc Yeah, that’s the problem, really. I even understand the words but don’t quite yet know how I’ll do this.

via Janetter for Mac in reply to terrymarc

Right. Geekery. Install mod_auth_mysql into Apache 2.2 under cPanel. Because it’ll be quicker than rewriting in mod_authn_dbd. Probably.

via Janetter for Mac

Having returned to my current eyrie, I will soon attempt to sort this morning’s annoying systems adminstration glitch. Oh, and the podcast.

RT @DuncanNRoss Where have they been living. Under a bridge?

If a writer is only in 2012 discovering “trolls” then they’re clearly a newcomer, clearly not qualified to be your guide online.

I just pay attention to what’s around me, @Steve_Lockstep, and the OHs emerge. I go nowhere special.

The noodles were not as inspiring as I’d hoped. Maybe if they’d quoted vague generic platitudes at me?

via TweetDeck

You should probably not think about how I’d know about that sort of thing.

Good God. There’s a guy here who looks exactly like @LiamT, had he overdosed on cheap bleach and spent 15 years working as a hooker.

But all triathlon-related road blocks were cleared at lunchtime, @Glebe2037 @jonoabroad. How many people take part?

via TweetDeck

It seems very quiet in the city. Did I miss a memo?

RT @tweeveetv TV shows that act like dicks on Twitter get extra special attention from the @tweeveetv bullshit detector. [Excellent.]

Do not confuse tonight’s Jack Mundey Mystery Tour with the Ted Bundy Mystery Tour.

Methinks I’ll wander to Chinatown for dinner. Along the way I may think about what to do for the “Patch Monday” podcast overnight.

Oh Christ, the Logies as well? I think I might just throw myself into the harbour now and avoid the grief.

RT @bleeters: honestly, it’s not a bad idea. us geeks do tend to circle jerk heaps and forget about the punters. [My exact thinking.]

via Janetter for Mac in reply to bleeters

Maybe I should just choose three random blokes at a pub and discuss the week’s technology stories with them. That’d be a fine podcast.

via Janetter for Mac

BTW, @en_gy, here’s a windmill. I’ve been tilting at it for some time, but it’s still quite serviceable.

via Janetter for Mac in reply to purserj

@en_gy I don’t have my camera with me this week. If I did, I’d provide evidence for the folly of your suggestion.

via Janetter for Mac

@en_gy In “The Larry Sanders Show” Hank Kingsley’s defence against a sexual harrassment claim was “breaking his fall with his tongue”.

via Janetter for Mac

That young man seems to be having extraordinary difficulty with the concept of “downstairs”. He’s asking repeatedly for directions.

via Janetter for Mac

@paulwallbank Thank you. I’m a big fan of pointless nostalgia, so glad @RadioNational could help. (Actually, I’m not.)

via Janetter for Mac in reply to paulwallbank

@RealNickHodge Maybe that’s a suitable topic for the “Patch Monday” podcast. That’s a technology, right?

via Janetter for Mac in reply to RealNickHodge

Oh, so suitably CC-licensed photos on Flickr get auto-trawled into Wikimedia Commons?Fair enough. commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bee_…

via Janetter for Mac

I’m so sorry, @kcarruthers @R_Chirgwin @chrisjrn, I was up very early and it’s possible that I may not be thinking clearly. Working on that.

via Janetter for Mac

Oh yeah, @AndrewCzzz, that patch. Thanks. But I’m still having a shower first. And afterwards, obviously. /cc @Nicholosophy @bleeters

via Janetter for Mac

Methinks I’ll have a shower and a walk in the fresh air before making that decision though, @bleeters @Nicholosophy. Or outsource it.

via Janetter for Mac in reply to bleeters

Actually, @bleeters @Nicholosophy, it’ll probably be quicker to flip the app to mod_authn_dbd than fuck around with mod_auth _mysql. Sigh.

via Janetter for Mac in reply to bleeters

No, that wasn’t an invitation for suggestions on re-writing a client’s application this morning. Just curious.

via Janetter for Mac

Needless to say, @Nicholosophy, the site containing the relevant patches is no longer online. ;) Has something superceded mod_auth_mysql?

via Janetter for Mac in reply to Nicholosophy

Is it just me, or is the sentence “This sort of bullshit should not be required in 2012” more than appropriate here?

via Janetter for Mac

So it’s true. I must patch mod_auth_mysql for Apache 2.2. skullboxx.net/kb/?q=node/348 Thanks, @Nicholosophy, and no thanks Apache in general.

via Janetter for Mac in reply to Nicholosophy

mod_auth_mysql “supports Apache 1.3 and 2.0 only”, not 2.2? That can’t be right, surely? docs.cpanel.net/twiki/bin/view…

via Janetter for Mac

The fact that I even know how to compile custom modules for the Apache web server disturbs me. I thought I was moderately sane.

via Janetter for Mac

Still astounded that cPanel considers mod_auth_mysql to be off-piste Apache. Oh well. We’re allowed to have opinions.

via Janetter for Mac

Sun plan, v2: Re-install mod_auth_mysql in cPanel; fix dumb Zend error (dumbness not Zend’s); Sunday lunch; produce “Patch Monday” podcast.

via Janetter for Mac

@GreenJ Why would you ruin stewed quinces like that?

People who don’t capitalise TARDIS shoud be banned from the media, @jason_a_w @GreenJ @RNSundayExtra @firstdogonmoon

via Janetter for Mac in reply to jason_a_w

Troubleshooting Apache module compile errors. Because cPanel reckons mod_auth_mysql is an unsupported third-party module. You heard me.

via Janetter for Mac

Wow. By the time I’d typed that last tweet, a support engineer had already emailed to say he was on the case. Whew.

via Janetter for Mac

Moment of Joy #77: “!! Restoring original working apache !!” then “!! Apache restart failed.” I am not a fool, I now escalate this.

via Janetter for Mac

There’s something vaguely reassuring about watching gcc chug along in the background.

via Janetter for Mac

So, the coffee has almost worked. Time to start the server upgrade regardless. One sticks to these schedules.

via Janetter for Mac

Sun plan: 0600 server upgrades; collapse again; at a sensible hour, produce “Patch Monday” podcast.
