via Janetter for Mac

Assuming that is, that the Google Hangouts still work. I’ll discover that at 1100.

via Janetter for Mac

Right, so “suspended” just means no-one can see my Google+ profile, it 404s. (HT @sroc.) Since I don’t want one anyway, it doesn’t matter.

via Janetter for Mac

RT @ozjimbob: How about some Unicode teddy bears in the surname field? [Brilliant idea!]

via Janetter for Mac

Huh? Even with a “suspended” Google+ profile, the “New Hangout” button seems active. Here’s the profile URL. plus.google.com/u/0/1116945487…

via Janetter for Mac

RT @John_Hanna: @stilgherrian @Andrew_Zammit Not to mention single word business names. [Profiles are for people. Businesses have “pages”.]

via Janetter for Mac

As you can see from the date on my original blog post, Google has known about this for two and a half years and yet it remains a problem.

via Janetter for Mac

Note that in all of this, Google only “reviews” Google+ profiles that look “unusual” to Americans. Straight-up false names go through fine.

via Janetter for Mac

So, I chose a “display as” option at random, and this is what Google+ now says. Excellent. twitpic.com/dtorta

via Janetter for Mac

As an aside, @Andrew_Zammit, there’s more than 13,000 people in Australia with a single-word name. I checked. abc.net.au/unleashed/2943…

via Janetter for Mac

RT @missdi_k: Is ‘The Stilgherrian’ taken? [Even if it is, which I doubt, they must be able to cope with two people having the same name.]

via Janetter for Mac

Indeed, @bastardsheep, but the “create a page” workaround creates the false impression that my name is a pseudonym, and it’s not.

via Janetter for Mac

RT @Andrew_Zammit: It’s absurd, single names are very common across the world (in Indonesia for example), why would they do that? [Idiocy.]

via Janetter for Mac

MT @michaelneale: Yet they [Google] let Vic Gundotra use his not real name. [Indeed. The hypocrisy is breathtaking.]

via Janetter for Mac

RT @jimmyville: Similar issues on Facebook tho? [Haven’t had a Facebook account for years, but at the time they fixed it manually.]

via Janetter for Mac

Google’s own Names Policy requires me to use my actual name, but their half-arsed engineering makes it impossible to comply.

via Janetter for Mac

The problem arising from Google’s incompetence is that I need a Google+ profile to host a Hangout soon, yet it can’t display my actual name.

via Janetter for Mac

The key problem is this. That “display as” is replicated across all Google services. twitpic.com/dtoqxh

via Janetter for Mac

So these are my only options. Gosh, thanks Google+! twitpic.com/dtoqj6

via Janetter for Mac

I am choosing “Update your profile name”.

via Janetter for Mac

My original workaround was a “.” in the surname field. My Google+ profile was suspended. These are my options today. twitpic.com/dtoqbh

via Janetter for Mac

So I’ll lie to Google+, enter my name in both name fields and the nickname field, and see whether that then screw up everything else.

via Janetter for Mac

The tl;dr version is that Google+ can’t cope with single-word names (mononyms). It still can’t, but at least it has “nicknames” now.

via Janetter for Mac

Some might remember what “Fix Google+ profile” entails. I used rather [cough] strong language at the time… stilgherrian.com/only-one-name/…
