@gpdawson This is true, though it’s not “urgent” as such any more ‘cos I’ve got a loaner organised while mine’s in for repairs.

@sylmobile Also, it has a boiling point of 300 °C.

via TweetDeck in reply to sylmobile

@sylmobile OK. Here is your clue. “The little nocturnal marsupial has combined red and blue.”

via TweetDeck in reply to sylmobile

@tacticalmaid You’ll have to love me short time, because it’ll probably be changed tomorrow.

via TweetDeck in reply to tacticalmaid

@sylmobile It is neither of those things either.

via TweetDeck in reply to sylmobile

@bigbadave @R_Chirgwin @corduroy I meant more generally, building / maintaining Windows and Linux boxes out of components. Life’s too short.

via TweetDeck in reply to bigbadave

@AbstractCode Bah. Setting fire to just one river? Amateur.

via TweetDeck in reply to AbstractCode

Posted earlier today, my Weekly Wrap, with links to all the several things that I did. twitter.com/stilgherrian/s…

via TweetDeck

@R_Chirgwin @corduroy Indeed. I decided to stop dealing with hardware at that level quite some time ago.

via TweetDeck in reply to R_Chirgwin

@Sigawan More importantly, I suspect that my Jedi mind powers are a bit shit.

via TweetDeck in reply to Sigawan

Thanks, you can all stop looking and providing advice now. A loaner MacBook Pro has been arranged, and life goes on.

via TweetDeck in reply to stilgherrian

@Sigawan Yeah I do have AppleCare. But it still takes time for machines to be repaired, which is the problem. An iPad wouldn’t cut it.

via TweetDeck in reply to Sigawan

@R_Chirgwin @corduroy Doubtless a fun exercise if you’re so inclined, but I’ve sorted a loaner machine thanks to a possibly-nice human.

via TweetDeck in reply to R_Chirgwin

@corduroy That’s most kind, but yes, broken machines are kinda the problem. :)

via TweetDeck in reply to corduroy

@thehuntinghouse Indeed. I bought that first external hard drive for my Fat Mac. It held a full 20MB. Luxury!

via TweetDeck in reply to thehuntinghouse

@corduroy Thanks, but I already know that’s not an option.

via TweetDeck in reply to corduroy

@19bk69 I have just seen this tweet, and have DM’d you.

via TweetDeck in reply to 19bk69

@BobGrrl Oh indeed, but it’s not an option for me.

via TweetDeck in reply to BobGrrl

@corduroy I think you over-estimate the amount of money I have lying around.

via TweetDeck in reply to corduroy

@thehuntinghouse Good God, we began at the same time then, if you’re talking what used to be called the Fat Mac. Early 1985?

via TweetDeck in reply to thehuntinghouse

@BobGrrl That would require having the funds for a whole new machine lying around.

via TweetDeck in reply to BobGrrl

@thehuntinghouse I tend to focus my sysadmin style on keeping them stable rather than heavily customised. YMMV indeed.

via TweetDeck in reply to thehuntinghouse

@thehuntinghouse I’ve never found any of them to be not-stable.

via TweetDeck in reply to thehuntinghouse

Curiously, NONE of the short-term rental outlets I’ve looked at so far has pricing on their website. What a weird, archaic little industry.

via TweetDeck

One MacBook Pro rental place says their machines have “Latest OS (currently Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard),” which is reassuring.

via TweetDeck

@iamMrDom Thanks. I should be able to find something, I’m sure.

via TweetDeck in reply to iamMrDom

@iamMrDom “New” in the sense that it’s the most recent, yes. It’s nine months old now. As for the rest, this is only one data point.

via TweetDeck in reply to iamMrDom

@Yunadal Yeah, businesses call them “issues” so they don’t have to say “problems”, because that sounds too negative.

via TweetDeck in reply to Yunadal

@SydneyTom_ Oh yeah I know that one. One of R, G, or B drops out. But no, this is just a truly ancient LCD panel.

via TweetDeck in reply to SydneyTom_

@Yunadal Oh yeah I know of that problem (I try not to say “issues”O), but that’s about the graphics driver, not the display.

via TweetDeck in reply to Yunadal

@Yunadal Without going into boring details, it’s a physical display fault. It’ll need a new screen.

via TweetDeck in reply to Yunadal

I plugged in a random ancient LCD monitor that was in the house here. It seems to have its own fascinating* theories about how colours work.

via TweetDeck

@hicksfilosopher Yeah? I’ve found them to be remarkably rugged. Except for liquids, that is.

via TweetDeck in reply to hicksfilosopher

Given that this MacBook Pro will presumably need to go in for a repair, has anyone got a spare Mac laptop I can borrow for a few days?

via TweetDeck

@hicksfilosopher Screens are hardware. :) But it’s a fault in the screen, I’m across the troubleshooting.

via TweetDeck in reply to hicksfilosopher

@kevthecamel Yes, I’ve done that already, but that doesn’t help that much ‘cos I need to be mobile.

via TweetDeck in reply to kevthecamel

Bugger. The fault on this MacBook Pro’s screen is getting worse. This is all just a little bit stressful and urgent now.

@jpwarren Huh? This is the very first problem since the machine was bought nine months ago.

via TweetDeck in reply to jpwarren

@awelder Only part of the screen is affected, so it’s workable, and I can plug in an external monitor. But the logistics are annoying.

via TweetDeck in reply to awelder

@garthk It’s school holidays, when people get things broken and/or fixed.

No Genius Bar appointments available until Thursday afternoon. I guess I’ll have to put up with a wonky display until then. Bother.

via TweetDeck

Oh excellent*, my MacBook Pro has developed a display fault. There’s something else to add into the week’s annoyances.
