On Saturday night, I’m recording and streaming live a special edition of The 9pm Edict podcast the likes of which you’ve never heard before. The voters of Australia are to blame. I need your help to undo some of the damage.

The results of Australia’s federal election held last Saturday are not yet clear. One of the few certainties, however, is that Queensland’s voters have propelled the red-headed figurehead of Pauline Hanson’s One Nation into the Senate.

One Nation’s full policy agenda isn’t just racist and anti-Islamic. Sure, it includes banning the burqa and niquab in public, banning halal certification, and a Royal Commission into Islam, but there’s much more.

How about scrapping all international treaties? Introducing Citizens Initiated Referenda, compensation for wind turbine syndrome, and euthanasia? Re-introducing trade tariffs? The list goes on.

Hanson is assertive. Treating her as just an amusing sideshow would be a mistake. She’ll push her party’s agenda in the Senate, so we’ll need to push back.

We need to understand.

We need to take a closer look.

We need to go inside the mind or Pauline Hanson’s One Nation.

Announcing “The 9pm Plan to 30 June”

Screenshot of Spreaker Studio appCareful listeners will have heard that I’m hoping to produce The 9pm Edict podcast to a more predictable schedule. That schedule will start on 1 July. Between now and then, there will be three episodes.

  1. A regular episode will appear next weekend, 21-22 May.
  2. The 9pm Edict Public House Forum 3 will be recorded on the afternoon of Saturday 4 June, at a venue to be announced in the next few days. (If you don’t know what that’s about, listen to Public House Forum 1 and Public House Forum 2.
  3. Another regular episode will appear around 20 or 21 June.

While all three episodes will be produced during Australia’s federal election campaign, I’ll try to avoid any me-too election commentary. Wish me luck.

I’ll also be restructuring the funding model for the podcast from 1 July. Combined with the new schedule, I’ll increment the series number from 4 to 5.

Weekly Wrap 291: Ready for a year of change

Sydney Sunrise from Lilyfield: click to embiggenMonday 28 December 2015 to Sunday 3 January 2016 was spent in the Sydney suburbs of Ashfield and Lilyfield, where the quiet week following Christmas heralded a new year that should see many, many changes.

I hope so, anyway, because I’ve got plenty of things to sort out. I’ll tell you more in due course.

The Week Ahead

I’ve got plenty to do in the coming week, but I won’t be able to schedule everything until I make some calls on Monday. I do know that most of it will be spent at Wentworth Falls, however.

That said, the week’s tasks include designing a website and a matching email template for a client; booking some medical appointments in Sydney; writing for ZDNet; scriptwriting for the next episode of The 9pm Edict; planning my coverage of Linux.conf.au; updating some of the stuff I use to explain what it is that I actually do; starting to tie up the loose ends from my crowdfunding projects; thinking about my future accommodation needs; and starting to bring my bookkeeping up to date so I can file five years of outstanding tax returns.

Further Ahead

The next episode of The 9pm Edict will be recorded on Thursday 14 January 2015, streamed live starting at 2100 AEDT.

The next episode of The 9pm Edict’s Public House Forum is likely to be recorded on the afternoon of Saturday 23 January. I’m thinking this should be a monthly thing.

In theory, in the first week of February I’ll be in Geelong to cover Linux.conf.au. And then on 10 to 12 February, I’ll be in Melbourne to speak at the Pause Fest.

Announcing “The 9pm Edict’s Public House Forum #2”

The 9pm Edict cover art version 2, 150 pixelsWould you like to witness the recording of another very special episode of The 9pm Edict podcast? Then organise yourself to be at the second Public House Forum on Saturday 19 December.

Yes, once more I’m recording a forum in a public house — yes, a pub — where four interesting people will join me to discuss the important issues of the day.

It’ll be a lot like the first one.

The panelists will include:

  • Jazz Twemlow, comedian, columnist for The Guardian, and writer
  • Kate Carruthers, UNSW übergeek and revolutionary cat
  • Nicole Williamson, Carbon and biotech consultant, or, as her Twitter profile puts it, “Science, Tech, Cleantech, Rugby Tragic, Aircraft Fleet Geek, Women as Leaders/Founders/Investors, all things Startup. Half Canadian, half Australian, half German”
  • … and possibly another.

The venue is the Salisbury Hotel, 118 Percival Road, Stanmore NSW 2048. The podcast recording starts at 2pm — but I strongly recommend that you arrive well before that, so you can order lunch and a few beverages and get into the mood.
