I did a lot of drinking during my week of Monday 6 to Sunday 12 June 2022. I am comfortable saying this. As I’ve already posted, ZDNet Australia has been shut down so I had a very long lunch with colleagues. And I enjoyed drinks both before and after catching the wonder Nigel Ng at the Enmore Theatre. I still managed to produce a podcast and do some other work, so there.
Podcasts
- The 9pm Big Moist China Conversation with Yun Jiang, recorded on Monday and posted on Tuesday. This is the first of seven special-guest episodes in the winter series, and it’s quite good. Even if I say so myself.
The 9pm Edict is supported by the generosity of its listeners. Do feel free to contribute to my upkeep.
Articles
- ZDNet Australia is no more, a blog post written and posted on Saturday. Yep, ZDNet‘s Australian office has been shut down. Farewell, everyone.
You can read my previous writing at Authory, where you can also subscribe to an email compilation of any new stories each Sunday morning. And as I said in the blog post, here’s an archive of my ZDNet stories.
Photos
- The photos in the Waratah sequence 2021 now span 285 days, and now include some images clearly showing the ripening of the seed pods.
Media Appearances
- Not a proper media appearance, but my 2020 ZDNet story Australian intelligence community seeking to build a top-secret cloud has been machine translated into Japanese and back, or something, with hilarious results. Australian cleverness area trying create a premier-magic affect.
Videos, Corporate Largesse
None of these. You can subscribe to my YouTube channel to be notified when new videos appear.

- A huge Atlantic ocean current is slowing down. If it collapses, La Niña could become the norm for Australia, so that’s a happy thought.
- You know that famous Vietnam War photoi of a little girl, totally naked, running towards the camera and away from a napalm attack? It’s 50 years old, and we have an interview with that woman. It’s Been 50 Years. I Am Not ‘Napalm Girl’ Anymore.
- Mike Seccombe’s piece for The Saturday Paper this week is excellent: Part one: Collapse of the modern Liberal Party. Can’t wait for part two next weekend. Maybe I should even get him on the podcast.
- How realistic are sci-fi spaceships? This is from 2018. It’s also overthinking a lot of things, and providing fuel for some very nerdy arguments. Have fun.
- 11 Weeks in Istanbul: from winter nosebleed to spring hay fever. I am thoroughly enjoying ’Pong’s photographs from each city as he shifts into this digital nomad lifestyle. He posts summaries and words on his blog, but you can see them quicker on Instagram.
- And before I forget, comedian Nigel Ng is returning to Sydney on 9 August. The Snarky Platypus and I saw him on Thursday night and it was well worth it. A short set up front as his famous character Uncle Roger, then a hour-long set of he as himself. Highly recommended.
The Week Ahead
Monday is the public holiday for the Queen’s Birthday. I plan to be quite lazy.
Bond on Tuesday continues with the fifth James Bond film to be released in cinemas, but one which isn’t part of the Eon Films series: Casino Royale (1967) starring David Niven. Get ready at 8.30pm AEST. We press PLAY at 8.40pm.
On Thursday I’m recording a podcast with David F Porteous before going to lunch with a friend. If you’re a supporter with TRIGGER WORDS or a CONVERSATION TOPIC for that episode, please let me know by 6pm AEST on Wednesday 15 June. The finished podcast will be posted on Friday.
In between all that, there will be more of the SEKRIT geek-work and editorial consulting, and I know I’ll be doing quite a bit this week. Except on the weekend. I don’t know what I’m doing on the weekend.
Further Ahead
Things are always a bit quiet at the turn of the financial year.
- TechLeaders Forum 2022, Leura NSW, 21–22 August 2022. After a hiatus during the Quarantimes, this once-annual gathering for tech journalists is returning for 2022. Its purpose is for industry PR people to meet the journos who cover their clients.
- NetThing: Australia’s Internet Community Forum, online, 27–28 October 2022 (TBC).
